This is a petite American Secretary in beautiful flame mahogany. This piece dates from the end of the Sheraton period to the very beginning of the Empire period (c1820-1830). Although this secretary has classical Sheraton characteristics (in the style of the feet, twisted columns, broken pediment top) one can see the influence of the Empire period in the clean lines of the drawers. The small size of the secretary makes it a rare piece. It was probably made for a child's room in a very upscale home. The top of the secretary has a brass finial, fluted columns on all four sides and in the middle. There are two shelves inside and the glass is framed in a diamond pattern. There is a key that locks the top doors. There are two drawers with wooden pulls. The top drawer has no pulls. This drawer functions as a support for the writing board, in that it is pulled out so that the writing board can rest on it. The writing surface has been redone in green blaize. This secretary would look stunning in a foyer or as a bedside piece. Would even work wonderfully in a large bath to hold linens, soaps, bath salts, etc.
