1817 Maryland legal writ regarding a case where a slave owner (Zachariah Dammer) is seeking damages because he was harmed after another man (John Cook) beat his slave. 8"X4.5" Document contains the Frederick County Seal............. FREDERICK COUNTY, to wit: The State of Maryland to the Sheriff of Frederick County, Greetings: You are hereby commanded to take John Cook late of Frederick County Yeoman-------------------- If he shall be found in your Bailiwick, and him safe keep, so that you have his body before the Judges of the next County Court, to be held at the Court-House in Frederick Town, in and for the said county, on the fourth Monday of October to answer unto Zachariah Dammer in a plea wherefore with force and arms and so forth the said John Cook upon a certain Negro woman named Milly the slave of him the said Zachariah an assault did make and the said Milly did beat wound and evilly treat whereby the said Zachariah the services of his said slave for a long time and did lose other harms to him the said Zachariah then and there did to great damage of him the said Zachariah and against the peace and so forth. HEREOF fail not, at your peril; and have you then and there this writ. Witness John Buchanan Esq.
