1800's Eoff & Shepherd silver fancy hinged box
This is for an antique mixed metal ( brass top and sterling bottom ) hallmarked hinged box with its original signed and hallmarked KEY ( which works too by the way). I was told it was possibly a Eoff & Shepherd because it is marked E& S. The mark on the box it identical to the lion and the marks on the key ( see photo) . If anyone has any info on this I will be glad to add it to this limited info I have at this time. The inside is lined with deep blue velvet. The box is really heavy ( 292 grams) and measures 5 ¼" x 3 1/3" and is 2" tall. The top is repousse with fleur delis like leaves on the top. It is larger than a trinket box so I am not really sure what it would have been used for. I know it has the initial D on the top so it actually had an owner at one time who took good care of it. The only tiny ding is on the one corner. It is so well built it must have been meant to really protect its contents because if you didnt have the key I doubt you could get into it. It is more like a safe . And it is Amazing to Still have the key !
