The chimney crane was a device used in most early kitchens. It was hung in the fireplace and used to hold the cooking pot at the proper distance from the fire. This heavy hand forged iron example features a large hook at each end with a large flat toothed bar and ratcheting lever for length adjustment. Adjusts in length from 41" to 64". A must for every colonial fireplace. Very solid with rust patination. Several similar examples are on display in the Tudor kitchens at Hampton Court Palace.
