Between 1921 and the end of World War II, ceramic pieces made in Japan were marked "Japan." This is a vintage vase with a hula dancer . Hula is the soul of Hawaii expressed in motion. No one knows its exact origins but Hawaiians agree that the first hula was performed by a god or goddess which makes the dance a sacred ritual. This vase would have been a tourist piece and is marked on the bottom Orchids of Hawaii Japan R-73-A on the bottom ( see two photos on the right of the mark. It measures 6 oe" tall and is glazed. It has one chip on the lip and three flea bites. No cracks. It has bottom shelf wear where the glaze was never on it .
