Hilt of round-section iron bars, with basket guard formed of 7 concentric rings joining a large pas d’ane on each side, the smallest on each side having its opening covered by a shell-shaped plate. The uppermost ring with looping bar joining the knucklebow and the reverse quillon. Ovoid pommel with button, vertically recurved quillons, and period leather covered grip. Sturdy 40 1/2" double-edged blade of flattened diamond-section with short ricasso and 8" central fuller, incised with the spurious signature "THOMAS EN AJALA"" on one side and "EN TOLEDO" on the other. Scattered light pitting and rust patina. Tomas Ayala (spellings vary) was a famous and prolific blade maker and blade smith to King Phillip II of Spain. As a mark of quality, his signature was often faked. Having owned many original Ayala blades it is our opinion that this blade is not from his workshop. An impressive rapier of large proportion; overall length 49 3/4". For similar example, see Fig. 16, "Rapiers", by Eric Valentine.
