Steel hilt of oval-section bars with three concentric rings on obverse, the largest joining the knucklebow. Vertically recurved quillons with scroll-shaped finials. Reverse with four round-section bars joining the lowermost ring on the obverse, coming together in a single bar and joining the knucklebow. Large tapered octagonal pommel with button (small piece of button missing on reverse). Square-section grip with iron wire wrap with turks heads top and bottom. Grip, pommel, and guard all loose to the blade, but appear to have always been with it and not taken apart. Double-edged 42 3/4" diamond-section blade with 8" central fuller, stamped on each side "IHS" with a small cross below the fuller. Covered with an old coat of lacquer to prevent rusting. Elegant style of rapier in very good original condition. Overall length 48 3/4".
