German Wheellock Hunting Carbine, ca. 1680

Long flat lockplate engraved with double line border and a hound chasing a stag. External wheel with sliding pan cover. Ebonized walnut stock with bone inlays depicting hounds and acanthus, carved in relief with foliage and hunting scenes. Cheek piece carved with hound attacking boar as hunter spears it, featuring mother-of-pearl inlaid border and plaques. Carved sliding spanner box cover. Approximately .70 cal. smoothbore barrel with relief chiseled breech and brass foresite. Carved bone fore end cap. Later ramrod with brass tip. Overall length 43". Some nicks to stock from age and use, with minor restorations, but otherwise original of the period. Very good condition with some pitting and wear on metal parts and yellowing to the bone inlays.
