German M1817/56 Infantry Hanger, Sword

One-piece cast brass d-guard hilt with integral ribbed grip, stamped with inventory number "357" on reverse quillon block. Retains original blue wool sword knot and scabbard throat cover. Curved 23 1/2" single-edged blade with no fuller, stamped with shield and "W & C" at the ricasso. Isaac Wester & Company, Solingen, 1820-1890, provided swords to the Swiss Army, as well as to both North and South in the American Civil War. Black leather scabbard with brass throat and drag, retaining leather belt strap. Obtained from a Swiss arsenal and in nearly mint condition.
