German 16th C Oak Livery Cupboard, Royal House of Hanover

Heavy frame and panel construction, entirely of thick solid oak. The 5 front panels from
the Biblical Book of Genesis; the top three from left to right depicting God creating Eve
as Adam sleeps, Adam & Eve with the tree and serpent, and Adam & Eve being cast out
of the garden. The lower panels depict Cain and Abel, with the right panel depicting
Cain slaying Abel. The large central panel is a door with later 17th C lock and pierced
iron hinges, with red velvet backing. Linenfold back and side panels; the upright frames
with applied split turnings. Solid top with molded cornice. A central drop finial depicts a
crouching man in 16th C attire, possibly depicting the cabinet’s maker. Some later
alterations, repairs, and restoration as typically found with furniture of this great age.
Height 61 ½", width 42", depth 20". Provenance: Royal House of Hanover, Schloss
Marienburg, sold at Sotheby’s Hanover Sale, October, 2005.
